Defence Day (Yaum-i Difa) is a public holiday that is celebrated as national day to commemorate in the memory of Pakistan’s successful defence against India that marked the ceasefire in the 1965 war on 6 September.

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 was a culmination of skirmishes that took place between April 1965 to September 1965 between Pakistan and India. This conflict became known as the Second Kashmir War fought by India and Pakistan over the disputed region of Kashmir, the first having been fought in 1947. The war began following Pakistan’s Operation Gibraltar, which was designed to infiltrate forces into Jammu and Kashmir to precipitate an insurgency against rule by India. The five-week war caused thousands of casualties on both sides. It ended in a United Nations (UN) mandated ceasefire and the subsequent issuance of the Tashkent Declaration.

To pay respects to the armed forces and to commemorate their sacrifices and bravery, the President, Prime Minister and other members of the government have marked the 6th of September as a national day.

Army of Pakistan displays their latest missiles, tanks, guns, army aviation helicopters and armament being used by Engineers, Electrical and Mechanical Corps, Army Air Defense, Signals, Army Service Corps and Army Medical Corps live on various places. Everyone is allowed to watch such functions live by going to the specific places. These shows are displayed on national channels as well. National songs and special documents about 6 September 1965 and martyred people of 6 September are displayed on TV. It is told to people how people gave sacrifices for the defense of the country and what is the responsibility of young generation now especially the children who are the future of Pakistan.

Defence Day celebrates the discipline, professionalism and patriotism of the Pakistan Armed Forces. It essentially celebrates the defence of Lahore and decisive victory over an overwhelming force in 1965.

Celebration of Defence Day 6th September in Pakistan:

The change of guard ceremony takes place at Mazar-e-Quaid, Karachi, where the cadets of Pakistan Air Force Academy present Guard of Honour and take the charge.

Nation is all set to celebrate Pakistan Defence Day on Tuesday with national patriotism and enthusiasm, reported on Monday.The day will dawn with special prayers in mosques for the progress and prosperity of the nation.

Tribute will be paid to the martyrs of 1965 war and their sacrifices for motherland with airing national anthem by all broadcasting networks.

The civil society will actively take part in the programs to highlight strong pledge of nation and armed forces to protect Pakistan.On the other hand, Inter-Services Public Relations has arranged a full-dressed rehearsal at Lahore’s Fortress Stadium.

In a statement, the citizens were also informed about the gun salute in the metropolis nearly at 10 am to 10:30 am so that they would not get afraid.

Separately in Peshawar, preparations are underway to arrange exhibition of army officials’ equipments for air defence, armour and artillery Corps, engineering instruments and many others.

Al-Khalid and Al-Zarrar tanks, Ababeel and Shahbaz Drones, arms and radar system used by armed forces would also be displayed in the exhibition.Meanwhile, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman said that Pakistan Air Force has sound history of valour, gallantry and professional excellence in defence of motherland.

The Air Chief said that great nations always remember its heroes and get inspiration from the history.On 6th September 1965, Pakistan s valiant armed forces and the entire nation stood united to foil the nefarious designs of the enemy who had dared cast an evil eye on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country.
