The candidates of various political parties including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), along with independent candidates will be contesting for leadership positions at district and local councils.

The elections for district councils, municipal corporations and municipal committees are underway in Punjab today. According to party sources, Chaudhry Nisar has asked the members to be available on December 5 and 6 as they may be called to the Punjab House in Islamabad for consultation to finalise the names of the party candidates for the slots of chairman and vice chairman. The province will elect chairmen of 35 district councils along with 67 vice-chairmen. 83 candidates are contesting the elections. The candidates are also contesting for 11 positions of mayor and 23 positions of deputy mayor.

Election for Mayors and Deputy Mayors are to be held in Punjab on December 22. In this regard, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday issued the schedule for filling up the seats chairman, vice chairman, Mayors and Deputy Mayors in district councils, Municipal Committees, Municipal Corporations and Metropolitan Corporation relating to Punjab province.

According to schedule, Returning Officers (ROs) are to be issued the public notice on the upcoming Tuesday, whereas nomination papers will be received on December 9-10 and scrutiny of nomination papers by the ROs on December 11-12. The last date for filing of appeals against decisions of the ROs rejecting/accepting the nomination papers is set on Dec 14. The last date for deciding appeals by the Appellate Authorities is Dec 15 and last date for withdrawal of candidature to be Dec 16. Publication of revised list of candidates along with symbols is to be issued on the same day.

With this, the countdown for the election of chairman and vice chairman of the MC has begun as the Punjab government has announced the schedule under which the candidates will file their nomination papers on December 9 and 10, election symbols will be allotted on December 16 while polling will be held on December 22.

  • According to initial and unofficial results, PML-N is leading the elections while Rana Sanaullah Group was declared successful in Faisalabad.PML-N‘s Riaz Ahmed Dar elected Alipur Chatha‘s Chairman Municipal Committee while PPP‘s Malik Tariq Nanha elected Renala Khurd‘s Chairman Municipal Committee.

    PML-N‘s Imran Shahid Butt elected Pattoki‘s Chairman Municipal Committee while candidate Chaudhry Zahid Nazir elected as Faisalabad‘s Chairman District Council.

    PML-N‘s candidate Rana Sikandar Hayat elected as Chairman District Council whereas independent candidate Rana Ateeq Anwar elected Sheikhupura’s Chairman District Council.

    PML-Q‘s Emaan Tahir elected as Chairman District Council while Independent Candidate Hafiz Khalid Mehmood elected Kanganpur‘s Chairman Municipal Committee.

    PML-N‘s Sheikh Shabbir elected Muridke’s Chairman Municipal Committee whereas Independent candidate Sadiq Khan elected Allahabad‘s Chairman Municipal Committee.

    PML-N’s Chaudhry Naveed Arain elected Multan’s Mayor while Independent candidate Imran Shah elected DG Khan’s Mayor.

    On the other hand, polling for the seats of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, Mayors and Deputy Mayors was carried out in the Local Government Institutions of the Punjab Province.

    In Punjab, out of 224 seats, 64 candidates have been elected unopposed. Out of 10 municipal corporations in Punjab, 5 candidates of PML-N have been elected unopposed.

    34 district council chairmen and 54 municipal committee chairmen have also been elected unopposed.

In this connection, the Election Commission had written a letter to the Ministry of Interior, asking for deployment of sufficient strength of Rangers inside and outside polling stations to ensure smooth and peaceful conduct of electoral process. No ministers or members of parliament would be allowed to enter the polling stations while voting is in process. Moreover, mobile phones are strictly not inside the polling booths.

The ECP, however, made it clear that the conduct of local government election will remain with it.  Meanwhile, the EC had also written a letter to the chief secretary of government of Punjab and IGP to issue the standard instructions to district coordination officer and DPO Toba Tek Singh for ensuring impartiality during the election in the district, wherein elections of chairman, vice chairman etc are fixed for December 22.

 As many as 37 councillors, including 16 women, elected on the seats reserved for women, youth, workers and non-Muslim communities for the MC and the union councils took oath at the community centre on Saturday.

Elections for all seats are to be held on December 22. Consolidation and declaration of Results by the Returning Officer are to be announced on the next day, December 23. ECP issued notification of the Returned Candidates on December 28, while elected members are to take oath on December 31. It’s pertinent to mentioned here that the offices of the Election Commission as well as the offices of District Returning Officers and Returning Officers shall remain open on public holidays (Saturday and Sundays) during this period in case any activity is involved.
