General Qamar Javed Bajwa was commissioned in 16 Baloch Regiment on 24 October 1980. He is graduate of Canadian Forces Command and Staff College, (Toronto) Canada, Naval Post Graduate University, Monteray( California) USA, National Defence Univesity, Islamabad.

He has been an instructor at School of Infantry and Tactics, Quetta, Command and Staff College, Quetta and NDU. He has also been Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade and Chief of Staff of Rawalpindi Corps.

He has commanded 16 Baloch Regiment, an Infantry Brigade and has commanded Infantry Division in Northern Areas (Commander FCNA). General Bajwa has also commanded Pakistan Contingent in Congo. He has commanded Rawalpindi Corps, and his last position was Inspector General Training and Evaluation at GHQ.

Bajwa is a graduate of Canadian Army Command and Staff College, Naval Postgraduate School, and National Defence University, Pakistan.

Chief of Army Staff

In November 2016, Bajwa was promoted to the rank of four star general and was appointed as the 16th Chief of the Army Staff of the Pakistan Army by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, succeeding Raheel Sharif.

Current affairs reported that Bajwa was appointed as the Chief of the Army Staff despite a maligning campaign on social media sites that spread claims that relatives of Bajwa were members of the Ahmadiyya Community. Pakistan media confirm reported that he was selected because of his low-profile personality.

The meeting comes soon after the appointment of General Zubair Mahmood Hayat as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and General Qamar Javed Bajwa as Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).

According to a spokesperson Prime Minister House, on the advice of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussain promoted Lt Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat and Lt Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa to the rank of General.

The profile of newly appointed CJCSC): Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat was commissioned in Artillery Regiment on October 24, 1980. He is graduate of Fort Sill Oklohoma, USA, Command and Staff College Camberlay United Kingdom and National Defence University, Islamabad.

He has wide experience of command, staff and instructional appointments. He has commanded an artillery regiment, mechanized division artillery, an infantry Brigade and an Infantry Division.

Gen Zubair has been Adjutant at PMA, Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Army and Air adviser at Pakistan embassy in the United Kingdom. He has also been Chief of Staff of a Strike Corps, Private Secretary to the COAS and Director General Staff Studies Directorate at GHQ.

He has also held the appointment of Director General Strategic Plan Division (SPD). He has commanded 31 Corps Bahawalpur and is presently Chief of the General Staff at GHQ.
